Bitcoin’s price fluctuations reflect macroeconomic trends, impacted by US policy changes. Despite a dip below $100,000, BTC shows structural strength, influenced by institutional interest and economic factors.

Bitcoin (BTC) has recently exhibited significant volatility, closely aligning with macroeconomic developments and US policy changes, as reported by Bitfinex. Over the past week, Bitcoin’s price fell below the $100,000 threshold, a move anticipated as part of a broader market correction. Despite starting 2025 with a 10% gain in January, Bitcoin’s momentum has slowed, encapsulating a 15% price range for the last 65 days.

Macroeconomic Influences on Bitcoin

Bitcoin’s price trajectory has increasingly mirrored US economic policies under President Donald Trump, with recent tariff announcements causing notable reactions in the market. The S&P 500 saw a 0.5% decline following these announcements, while Bitcoin experienced a more significant drop. This has led to a 30-day rolling correlation between Bitcoin and the S&P 500 reaching 0.8, the highest in five months, indicating Bitcoin’s behavior as a macro-driven risk asset.

Structural Strength Despite Short-Term Volatility

Despite these short-term fluctuations, Bitcoin maintains structural strength over longer periods. Since the US election, Bitcoin has surged from $67,000 to over $100,000, outperforming traditional market indices, which have shown inconsistent recoveries.

US Economic Landscape

The US economy is demonstrating resilience with robust consumer spending and economic growth, yet it faces challenges from policy uncertainties and inflation. The Federal Reserve has maintained interest rates between 4.25% and 4.50%, indicating a cautious approach to monetary policy until inflation subsides. December saw a 0.4% rise in real consumer spending, further bolstering economic growth but complicating the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions.

Cryptocurrency Sector and Institutional Interest

As the US economy grapples with resilience and uncertainty, the cryptocurrency sector is at a pivotal juncture characterized by institutional accumulation and financial innovation. MicroStrategy has acquired an additional 10,107 BTC for $1.1 billion, increasing its total holdings to 158,400 BTC, and Metaplanet has raised $745 million to expand its Bitcoin reserves, underscoring a strong institutional belief in Bitcoin as a hedge against economic instability.

Moreover, Tether is enhancing its $140 billion USDt stablecoin by integrating it with Bitcoin’s Lightning Network, promoting faster and more efficient global transactions. This development bridges the gap between stablecoins and Bitcoin’s security, expanding Bitcoin’s utility beyond a store of value to a viable payment network.
