Beca’s BEYON platform, integrated with Microsoft Azure, is revolutionizing New Zealand’s geotechnical data management, enhancing safety and efficiency.

New Zealand’s efforts to rebuild safer and smarter after the devastating 2011 Christchurch earthquake have received a major boost with the integration of artificial intelligence and digital twin technology into geotechnical data management. The National Geotechnical Database (NZGD), now hosted on Beca’s BEYON platform and powered by Microsoft Azure, is enabling faster, more informed decision-making for engineers and infrastructure planners.

Originally created in 2013 to centralize fragmented geotechnical data, the NZGD was recently overhauled with modern cloud and AI capabilities. In November 2024, Beca relaunched the platform with an SQL database on Microsoft Azure, emphasizing scalability, security, and advanced spatial analytics. This move has transformed the database into a critical tool for managing New Zealand’s infrastructure projects.

Lessons from Christchurch

The Christchurch earthquake underscored the dire need for accessible subsurface data. Engineers struggled to make decisions on whether to repair, demolish, or rebuild structures due to the fragmented nature of geotechnical information. “Collating data was a massive challenge,” said Beca CEO Amelia Linzey. “Creating a common repository as a national asset became a necessity.”

Today, the NZGD hosts over 168,000 geotechnical tests, and its AI-powered features allow users to query and extract critical data using natural language—saving time and reducing errors. Stephen Witherden, Beca’s Product Strategy Manager, noted that the AI assistant, developed at Microsoft Foundry, accelerates data access while adhering to strict response guardrails.

Digital Twins Drive Innovation

Beca’s BEYON platform stands at the heart of this transformation. A digital twin system, BEYON creates virtual replicas of physical assets, consolidating complex data streams into a unified dashboard. This approach allows engineers to simulate scenarios, predict outcomes, and optimize resource use—key for tackling New Zealand’s unique geological challenges.

Shifting NZGD to BEYON on Azure has also unlocked new possibilities for collaboration. “Accessibility and scalability are paramount,” said Witherden, emphasizing the role of Azure’s security features like Entra ID in safeguarding sensitive data. The platform now supports over 4,300 users, from engineers to local authorities, improving infrastructure planning and risk mitigation at a national scale.

Building for the Future

Looking ahead, this AI-powered geotechnical system could serve as a model for other countries grappling with infrastructure resilience. By integrating digital twins and AI, Beca is not just managing data but enabling a smarter, more sustainable approach to development.

Beca, founded in 1920 and with over 4,000 employees globally, has positioned BEYON as a versatile tool for industries beyond geotechnical data. From supporting climate adaptation planning to reimagining manufacturing processes, the platform embodies Beca’s vision of sustainable, technology-driven solutions.

For New Zealand, the upgraded NZGD is more than just a database; it’s a critical step toward safer, more efficient infrastructure development, leveraging cutting-edge tools to turn past lessons into future resilience.
