OpenAI enhances ChatGPT safeguards for teens, introducing parental controls, age-specific content filters, and new learning tools.

OpenAI is doubling down on its commitment to creating a safer AI experience for teens, announcing a suite of new features and safeguards for ChatGPT, including advanced parental controls, age-specific content filters, and tools designed to foster critical learning skills. With nearly 90% of teens reportedly using ChatGPT for educational and productivity purposes weekly, the company is positioning these protections as essential for responsible AI access.

Among the updates is a reinforced age-prediction system, first introduced in January 2026, which automatically applies stricter content filters and feature limitations to users under 18. This system ensures that teens encounter fewer instances of graphic violence, inappropriate roleplay, or harmful viral trends while using ChatGPT. Parental controls, initially rolled out in September 2025, have also been expanded to allow parents to set quiet hours, enable or disable specific functionalities like voice mode and image generation, and receive notifications in high-risk scenarios such as self-harm indicators.

OpenAI’s focus on education has led to new learning tools like Study Mode, developed with input from teachers and learning scientists. This feature encourages active engagement by guiding teens through problem-solving with structured prompts and explanations, avoiding the trap of merely providing answers. Early evaluations have shown promising improvements in student performance, according to OpenAI’s internal research. The company also introduced starter prompts tailored for educational tasks, such as breaking down complex topics, generating study guides, and creating practice questions.

“Teens are the first generation growing up with AI, and this technology will heavily shape their future,” OpenAI stated in a blog post. The company emphasizes that withholding access to AI tools until adulthood would be akin to previous generations being denied the internet until their late teens—leaving them unprepared for a tech-driven world. However, OpenAI acknowledges that broad access must be paired with robust safeguards tailored to teens’ unique developmental needs.

Safety remains a central theme. Beyond automated safeguards, OpenAI has collaborated with experts such as the American Psychological Association, Moonshot, and the Family Online Safety Institute to refine its approach. The company’s Teen Safety Blueprint, published in November 2025, outlines principles like prioritizing safety over other objectives, fostering real-world support systems, and providing transparency in AI interactions. These policies are further reinforced through partnerships with organizations like Common Sense Media to develop industry-wide best practices.

In terms of content moderation, teen accounts have “Reduce sensitive content” enabled by default, ensuring AI responses align with age-appropriate standards. OpenAI’s systems also include break reminders for teens spending prolonged periods on ChatGPT, promoting balanced usage and healthier technology habits.

The latest updates also show OpenAI’s willingness to escalate safety protocols in critical situations. For instance, parents are notified when linked teen accounts are flagged for violations of usage policies, such as violent threats. These measures are informed by consultation with online safety experts to ensure they are effective and respectful of privacy.

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to further enhance its protections and learning tools while continuing to work with regulators, educators, and safety organizations. The company has called for global standards for youth AI safety, emphasizing the need for a collaborative effort to ensure young people can benefit from AI responsibly.

As AI technology becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, OpenAI’s layered approach to teen safety sets a benchmark for the industry. By balancing access with safeguards, the company aims to empower the next generation to navigate, learn, and thrive in an AI-driven world.
