Michael Saylor Maps Bitcoin Into 4-Part Digital Money Stack

Key Takeaways

  • Saylor assigns separate purposes to bitcoin, credit, and payments.
  • STRC supplies the existing income-producing layer of the model.
  • Solstice’s SR-strcUSX targets a 7% annual yield, with junior capital absorbing losses first.

Saylor Extends Bitcoin Beyond Direct Ownership

Bitcoin can support several financial products rather than only function as a standalone asset, according to a framework Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR) Executive Chairman Michael Saylor shared Aug. 13. The framework targets varying investor demands for appreciation, income, stability, and payments.

Saylor used an oil-refining analogy to explain how financial engineering could expand bitcoin’s utility, writing on X:

“You can live on bitcoin. You can also build on it. Crude oil is valuable, but civilization gets more utility by refining it into gasoline, jet fuel, plastics, lubricants, and asphalt. Bitcoin is Digital Capital. Innovation turns capital into credit, money, and currency.”

In an accompanying monetary spectrum, Saylor arranged BTC, STRC, SR-strcUSX, and USDT from higher return potential toward stability and transactional utility. The diagram illustrates each layer’s intended function.

Each Layer Changes the Risk and Use Case

Bitcoin occupies the capital layer as a bearer asset, while Saylor classifies STRC, a company-issued preferred stock offering variable income, as digital credit. The Strategy executive chairman previously characterized the preferred-stock lineup as a fixed-income engine for yield-seeking investors.

SR-strcUSX is the senior token in Solstice Finance’s strcUSX structured product, which Solstice unveiled Aug. 10 on Solana. Users deposit USX into a vault holding STRC exposure and receive senior or junior tokens. SR-strcUSX targets a 7% annual yield and receives income first, while JR-strcUSX absorbs losses from changes in STRC’s value before senior holders do.

STRC differs from SR-strcUSX since it is a Nasdaq-listed perpetual preferred stock issued by Strategy. The company describes STRC as short-duration, high-yield credit carrying a 12% variable annualized dividend rate for August. The company adjusts the rate monthly to encourage trading near $100, while dividends require board declaration and legally available funds.

Tether’s USDT sits at the payment end as a dollar-linked stablecoin exposed to issuer, reserve, redemption, counterparty, and regulatory risks despite its stable-value design. Within the framework, USDT provides a liquid, dollar-denominated medium for transfers and settlement without bitcoin’s price exposure or STRC’s dividend income.

Saylor recently presented his digital-credit strategy at Goldman Sachs’ Digital Assets Conference in London. During the late-June appearance, he told the bank’s clients that bitcoin could serve as the capital foundation for a new credit market for investors seeking income without holding the asset directly. The presentation connected his framework with institutional capital markets.

Direct Bitcoin Use Avoids the Corporate Credit Layer

Bitcoin can function independently of Saylor’s proposed financial stack as a transferable digital asset used for saving and payments. Holders can send BTC directly between wallet addresses and pay participating merchants by scanning QR codes in person or selecting bitcoin during online checkout.

Direct ownership exposes holders to bitcoin’s price volatility and custody requirements. Strategy’s preferred securities introduce a different risk structure, as their value and dividends depend on the company’s finances, liquidity, and capital-management decisions.

Saylor recently identified that structure as a potential billion-dollar business opportunity in finance, arguing that companies could issue income-producing securities for investors who want yield without holding bitcoin directly.
