Zcash Vote Backs 25-Second Blocks and Halving Schedule

Zcash coinholders have backed a sharp reduction in block times and voted to retain the network’s Bitcoin-style halving schedule in a governance poll that closed on September 14. Roughly 2.4 million ZEC took part, equivalent to about 66% of the approximately 3.6 million ZEC eligible at the snapshot and comfortably above the 1 million ZEC participation threshold.

The result gives the NU7 process a strong mandate to prioritize faster transactions, while preserving discrete reductions in issuance rather than moving to a smooth supply curve. It is not, however, an immediate protocol upgrade: the selected measures still need implementation, testing and formal network-upgrade activation.

NU7 vote clears participation threshold with 2.4 million ZEC

Roughly 2.4 million ZEC participated in the NU7 poll, against about 3.6 million ZEC eligible at the snapshot, according to the published results.

That was around two-thirds of eligible ZEC and more than twice the 1 million ZEC minimum, so the poll cleared the threshold for a valid governance signal.

The vote recorded coinholder preferences over proposed NU7 directions; it did not activate code. Implementation, testing and formal network-upgrade activation are still required before the selected features can be deployed.

25-second blocks target lower latency and higher Orchard throughput

The clearest result was support for cutting Zcash’s target block spacing to 25 seconds from 75 seconds. Coinholders supported that change by 99.9%, according to the vote result.

ZIP 218, the underlying proposal, describes the intended effect as a threefold reduction in user latency. It also estimates that Orchard throughput would rise from approximately 2.9 transactions per second to 6.6 transactions per second.

The throughput estimate applies specifically to Orchard, the protocol component referenced in the proposal, rather than to all Zcash activity. Holders’ choice is nevertheless unambiguous: faster block production is the transaction-focused priority for the next network-upgrade cycle.

A shift from 75-second to 25-second target spacing would alter the cadence at which blocks are produced. The eventual operational outcome will depend on the proposal making it through implementation and testing before an activation can be scheduled.

Coinholders retain halving schedule over smooth issuance

Voters favored preserving Zcash’s Bitcoin-style halving schedule, with 2,375,932.375 ZEC in support and 22,384.875 ZEC backing a smooth issuance curve, according to the community forum’s results.

That choice favors periodic supply reductions over distributing issuance changes more evenly over time.

It is separate from the proposal to reduce target block spacing, which concerns block timing and the associated Orchard capacity estimate. Together, the votes set priorities for NU7 contributors to preserve the halving schedule while pursuing lower transaction latency.

NU7 shipping and 2031 fee reissuance

Approximately 99.3% of coinholders supported shipping NU7 as soon as possible rather than waiting for every proposed feature, CoinDesk reported. The same report said 96.6% supported beginning Network Sustainability Mechanism fee reissuance in February 2031.

The vote was a governance signal, not an immediate protocol change: selected features still require implementation, testing and formal activation through the network-upgrade process, The Token Press reported.
