GitHub has announced the general availability of Model Context Protocol (MCP) in VS Code, enhancing GitHub Copilot’s capabilities by allowing integration with external tools and data sources.

GitHub has announced the general availability of Model Context Protocol (MCP) support in Visual Studio Code (VS Code), marking a significant enhancement for developers using GitHub Copilot. This development enables the integration of external tools and data sources, thereby expanding the capabilities of Copilot to provide a more context-aware coding experience, according to GitHub.

MCP Integration with GitHub Copilot

With the release of VS Code version 1.102, MCP support has transitioned from preview mode to full production use. This change allows developers to integrate MCP servers into their workflows, extending the functionality of Copilot with custom tools, resources, and APIs. This move is expected to enhance productivity and provide developers with more robust coding assistance.

Policy Changes for Organizations

For organizations and enterprise administrators, MCP access within Copilot on VS Code is no longer governed by the Editor Preview Features policy. Instead, it is now managed by the MCP servers in Copilot policy. This policy is initially disabled and requires activation by an organization or enterprise administrator. The original Editor Preview Features policy will continue to manage MCP access in other editors where MCP is still in public preview, such as Visual Studio, Eclipse, and JetBrains IDEs.

Getting Started with MCP

Developers eager to leverage MCP can begin by installing popular MCP servers from VS Code’s curated list. Detailed guidance on utilizing MCP servers in VS Code is available, offering insights into how these can be used to enhance agent mode functionalities. This integration is poised to offer developers a versatile and enriched coding environment.

As GitHub continues to innovate, the introduction of MCP support in VS Code exemplifies its commitment to empowering developers by providing tools that enhance flexibility and efficiency in coding practices.
