Fake payment scams increasingly leverage crypto for irreversible transactions, costing victims billions globally. Learn the red flags to stay safe.

Fake payment scams are surging globally, with cryptocurrency becoming a preferred tool for fraudsters due to its irreversible and pseudonymous nature. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report, cyber-enabled losses reached nearly $21 billion in 2025, fueled in part by crypto and AI-assisted schemes. Recent advisories underline the urgency of understanding how these scams operate.

At their core, fake payment scams aim to deceive victims into believing they’ve received or must send money under false pretenses. Common tactics include fake payment confirmations, overpayment scams, or fake crypto trading platforms. Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency, impersonate trusted entities, and use spoofed emails, screenshots, or fake IDs to gain trust. They then push victims toward payment methods that are hard to dispute, such as wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.

The crypto angle is particularly concerning. Scammers often lure victims into depositing funds on fraudulent platforms that display fake profits. As trust builds, victims are encouraged to invest more before being hit with withdrawal restrictions or demands for additional “fees.” According to FTC alerts, any unsolicited demand for payment in crypto is a major red flag.

Law enforcement impersonation scams also play a significant role. Between January 2025 and July 2026, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received nearly 61,000 complaints about such schemes, resulting in over $1.6 billion in losses. These scams frequently involve claims of unpaid taxes or frozen accounts, pressuring victims to make immediate crypto payments.

While the financial losses in these scams are staggering, the psychological impact can be equally severe. Victims are often left feeling violated and distrustful, further complicating recovery efforts. Scammers’ use of AI-generated voice clones and deepfake videos adds another layer of sophistication, making these schemes harder to detect.

For crypto users, vigilance is critical. Binance’s recent blog post highlights the need to verify any payment claims, avoid sharing sensitive information, and use secure wallets. Users should also be wary of unsolicited messages or high-pressure tactics, especially those involving cryptocurrency transactions.

As scammers continue to adapt, education remains the best defense. Recognizing the warning signs—such as demands for crypto payments or offers that seem too good to be true—can prevent costly mistakes. With the FBI and FTC emphasizing consumer awareness, staying informed is no longer optional in the digital age.
