Fear And Greed Index At 73 Or 55? Why The Trackers Disagree

Quick Take

1. CoinMarketCap’s Fear and Greed Index reads 73, firmly in Greed, while CFGI’s crypto index reads 55, Neutral, both as of September 25.

2. The gap comes from inputs: the widely cited model weights volatility and market momentum at 25% each, with dominance and Google Trends at 10% each, while other trackers use different indicator sets entirely.

3. The reading has cooled from 78 earlier in the week, which matters more than the absolute number because direction is the part that has historically carried information.

A crypto sentiment gauge is supposed to give a single answer to a simple question. Today two of them looked at the same market and disagreed by 18 points, which is the difference between a market that is greedy and one that is not.

CoinMarketCap’s Fear and Greed Index sits at 73, in the Greed band. CFGI reports 55, Neutral, as of 00:20 UTC on September 25. Bitcoin trades at $84,558.90, up 1.58%, with total crypto market capitalization at $2.89 trillion.

What is the Fear and Greed Index?

The Fear and Greed Index is a sentiment gauge scoring crypto market emotion from 0 to 100, where low readings indicate extreme fear and high readings indicate extreme greed.

The logic is contrarian in origin. Extreme fear is meant to flag assets that may be oversold, and extreme greed to flag froth. Readings below 25 are typically labelled extreme fear, 25 to 45 fear, 45 to 55 neutral, 55 to 75 greed, and above 75 extreme greed, though bands vary by provider.

Why do the trackers disagree?

Because they measure different things and call the result the same name.

The most widely cited methodology, published by alternative.me, weights volatility at 25%, market momentum and volume at 25%, social media at 15%, Bitcoin dominance at 10%, and Google Trends at 10%. Dominance is treated inversely: since Bitcoin is seen as the safer asset, higher dominance signals fear and lower dominance signals greed. Trends data counts search volume for negatively framed queries as fear.

Other providers use entirely different inputs. CFGI states that it uses ten indicators and scores hundreds of individual assets separately, noting spreads of more than 60 points between coins on a single day. A model scoring the whole market as one unit will diverge from one that averages individual assets, particularly during a rotation when some assets are euphoric and others are flat.

Neither is wrong. They answer different questions, and the difference is invisible if you only ever look at one.

Which reading should you use?

Whichever one you use consistently, and never as a trigger on its own.

Two practical points follow from the methodology. First, the inputs are heavily weighted toward price behaviour: volatility and momentum together account for half the widely cited model. That means the index largely describes what prices have already done rather than what they will do. A 16-point single-day jump earlier this cycle followed an 8.8% Bitcoin move, not the other way round.

Second, direction matters more than level. The index reached 78 earlier this week and has since cooled to 73. A falling reading from a high level has historically been more informative than any absolute number, because it captures the moment enthusiasm starts fading while prices are still elevated.

The boundary: sentiment indexes are lagging, derivative measures. They are useful as context alongside flows, breadth and positioning data, and they are a poor basis for a decision by themselves.

What does 73 mean in this market?

Greed, without the extreme reading that has historically accompanied tops.

The market around it supports a greedy interpretation. XRP gained 6.59% to $1.5540, Solana 4.42% to $118.20, and the Altcoin Season Index has climbed to 56 from 48 on September 19. NEAR Protocol is up roughly 92% in a week. Bitcoin itself has reclaimed the $82,225 average cost basis of US spot ETF holders for the first time since January.

What is absent is the extreme-greed signature. Readings above 80 have typically coincided with the phase where retail buys every dip aggressively and new token launches proliferate, conditions that function as warnings rather than confirmations. The index touched 78 this week and pulled back rather than pushing through.

This site’s own daily breadth record shows participation broadened sharply on September 17, from 12 advancers to 89, and has stayed wide since. Broad participation alongside greed is a healthier combination than narrow leadership alongside euphoria.

Bottom line

CoinMarketCap’s Fear and Greed Index reads 73 and CFGI’s reads 55 on the same day, an 18-point gap produced by different indicator sets, which is why the direction of a single index matters more than the level of any of them.

The useful discipline is to pick one tracker, learn what it measures, and watch how it moves rather than where it sits. Anyone quoting a fear and greed number without naming the source is quoting one of several answers and presenting it as the answer.
