All news is rigorously fact-checked and reviewed by leading blockchain experts and seasoned industry insiders.
  • Spot trading across 14 tracked exchanges rose 36.5% in September.
  • Binance’s share fell from 47.6% to 44.2%, despite higher trading volume.
  • Coinbase recorded stronger monthly growth than Binance and OKX.

Binance lost market share in September despite processing substantially more cryptocurrency spot trades, as competing exchanges captured a greater proportion of the market’s recovery.

According to WuBlockchain’s October 13 report, trading volume across 14 monitored exchanges reached $696.7 billion, compared with $510.4 billion in August.

The 36.5% monthly increase marked an acceleration from August’s 19% recovery. Every exchange in the sample recorded higher turnover, but the gains were uneven.

Binance remained the largest platform by a considerable margin. Its declining share reflected faster growth elsewhere rather than an outright reduction in trading activity.

Binance Grew, but Its Competitors Expanded Faster

Binance processed $307.8 billion in September spot trades, up from $243.1 billion in August. That represented a 26.6% increase, below the growth rate of the overall sample.

Consequently, its share of reported volume fell by 3.4 percentage points to 44.2%.

The change was particularly visible among its nearest competitors.

OKX generated $65.8 billion in spot turnover, up from $46.9 billion a month earlier. Coinbase followed with $61.3 billion, compared with $40.9 billion in August.

Coinbase’s monthly growth approached 50%, while OKX expanded by approximately 40%. Both outpaced Binance, although neither came close to matching its absolute trading volume.

The combined share of the three largest exchanges declined from 64.8% to 62.4%.

An analysis of WuBlockchain’s published figures shows that the remaining 11 exchanges increased their combined turnover from approximately $179.5 billion to $261.8 billion.

Their growth rate of roughly 45.8% exceeded the 31.4% expansion recorded by the top three.

This is the clearest indication of how September’s recovery differed from a rally driven primarily by the market leader.

Market Share Shift

A Reversal From July’s Exchange-Wide Decline

The September results become more significant when viewed against the preceding two months.

In July, trading volume fell 21.7% to $429 billion, with all 14 monitored exchanges recording declines.

The following month brought a partial recovery. According to the August report, 13 exchanges posted gains and only one reported lower turnover.

September extended that improvement across the entire sample.

Total spot activity increased approximately 62.4% between July and September, although the rebound followed a particularly weak starting point.

The exchange rankings also shifted during this period.

Bybit held third place in July with $36.3 billion in spot volume, while Coinbase ranked behind it at $30.3 billion.

Coinbase moved into third position in August and retained that ranking in September.

Its turnover more than doubled between July and September, compared with an increase of approximately 56.6% at Binance.

However, the data does not establish whether Coinbase gained customers directly from Binance or Bybit. Market-share changes can result from different growth rates among existing users without substantial customer migration.

Why Market Share Matters More Than the Headline Volume

Higher aggregate turnover does not necessarily mean that trading activity has become more evenly distributed.

A market can expand rapidly while its largest venues strengthen their dominance. September’s figures show the opposite pattern within WuBlockchain’s sample.

The distinction matters for exchange competition because sustained increases in trading activity can attract liquidity providers, institutional counterparties and market makers.

Nevertheless, volume alone is insufficient to establish improvements in execution quality.

An exchange may report greater turnover while continuing to offer relatively shallow order books for particular trading pairs. Conversely, a venue with lower total volume may provide tighter spreads and better execution for specific assets.

Assessing those differences requires additional information, including order-book depth, bid-ask spreads and slippage under different trade sizes.

There is also a limitation to the market-share figures themselves.

WuBlockchain measures a defined group of 14 exchanges. Its reported percentages describe the distribution of activity within that sample, not each platform’s share of every cryptocurrency trade worldwide.

How Reliable Is the Reported Trading Activity?

WuBlockchain acknowledges that its dataset may contain significant wash trading or automated activity.

The research team says it preprocesses the figures through outlier removal, calibration and standardization, but these adjustments do not independently establish that every reported transaction represents genuine investor demand.

Automated market-making and arbitrage can generate substantial turnover, while wash trading may artificially inflate activity without meaningful changes in economic ownership.

The September report does not provide sufficient information to isolate these effects for individual exchanges.

For that reason, the strongest conclusion is narrower than a broad claim about new investors entering cryptocurrency markets: reported spot activity recovered across the monitored venues, with faster growth outside the largest three platforms.

Whether that shift persists will become clearer in subsequent monthly reports, particularly if higher turnover is accompanied by stronger order-book liquidity.
