OpenAI’s Images 2.6 update introduces 50% faster image generation, GIF creation, and advanced API controls for ChatGPT, Codex, and the API.
OpenAI has announced the release of Images 2.6, a significant update to its image-generation and editing tools available across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API. The update introduces faster image generation, GIF creation capabilities, and enhanced API controls, aiming to improve both creative workflows and developer flexibility.
Faster Image Generation and New API Features
According to OpenAI, Images 2.6 delivers a 50% improvement in image generation speed compared to its predecessor. The new GPT-Image-2.6 Flare model can generate low-quality images in as little as six seconds, while the Sunburst variant focuses on high-quality, detailed outputs with greater consistency in edits. A newly introduced complexity parameter allows developers to balance planning and execution, offering flexibility for quick edits or elaborate scene creation.
GIF Creation and Enhanced Editing
One of the standout features of Images 2.6 is its ability to create animated GIFs. OpenAI demonstrated a workflow that uses six sequential animation frames arranged in a three-column, two-row sprite sheet to produce seamless loops. This addition is expected to benefit creative professionals working on dynamic content such as advertisements and social media campaigns.
Adoption and Use Cases
OpenAI reports that users are currently generating four billion images per week across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API. Early-access customers, including Picsart and Figma Weave, have leveraged the update to enhance production workflows, particularly in preserving character, product, and brand details. The improvements in layout quality for posters and product imagery further expand its utility in professional design applications.
Strategic Context
Images 2.6 builds on the foundation established by ChatGPT Images 2.0, which was launched on April 21, 2026, and introduced advancements in instruction-following, layouts, and text rendering. By refining speed, precision, and versatility, OpenAI aims to solidify its position as a leader in AI-driven creative tools.
