(WJET/WFXP)– A Crawford County woman was scammed out of more than $20,000 recently after being the target of an online cryptocurrency scam.

Pennsylvania State Police in Meadville were called to Cussewage Twp. home on March 11 after a Cambridge Springs resident said online actor(s) told her to buy $20,000 worth of Bitcoin.

Police said the actor(s) were pretending to be from the Federal Trade Commission and she was required to send them the money in order to secure her accounts.

Receipts for the transactions were sent to the actor(s) and $22,540 was removed from the victim’s account.

PSP is reminding residents to never send payments or personal information to federal or state agencies.

Agencies will never ask you to make payments to them over the phone especially if they’re asking for cryptocurrencies or gift cards; if someone is asking you to pay in that manner, it is a scam.
