Coinbase has expanded its Latin American footprint by securing regulatory approval in Argentina, aiming to tap into the country’s growing crypto adoption with a focus on security, education, and financial inclusion.
Coinbase Gains VASP Registration
Crypto exchange Coinbase has received regulatory approval to launch crypto services in Argentina, marking its latest expansion in Latin America. The US-based exchange announced on Tuesday that Argentina’s National Securities Commission (CNV) granted it a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration.
This development aligns with Coinbase’s broader mission to promote economic freedom through cryptocurrency adoption. The company first expanded into the region in 2023 by launching services in Brazil.
Strengthening Local Operations
To lead its Argentine operations, Coinbase has appointed Matías Alberti, a fintech industry veteran with experience at Buenbit and Clara.
Commenting on the appointment, Coinbase Americas director Fabio Plein stated:
“Matías brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the local market. We’re confident in his leadership as we work to bring crypto services to millions of Argentinians.”
Argentina has become an emerging hub for cryptocurrency adoption, with approximately 5 million citizens using crypto in daily transactions. According to Coinbase, 87% of Argentinians view digital assets as a viable solution to economic challenges, including inflation and high transaction costs.
Coinbase’s Commitment to Security and Education
Coinbase aims to support Argentina’s growing crypto adoption through educational initiatives and secure trading services. Plein emphasized the company’s dedication to building user confidence, stating,
“Our educational initiatives will equip Argentinians with the knowledge and confidence they need to navigate the opportunities and challenges of the crypto ecosystem.”
Additionally, Plein underscored Coinbase’s focus on trust and security in the region, stating,
“Security and trust are at the core of Coinbase. We are committed to offering Argentinians a platform that meets the highest industry standards while ensuring ease of use.”
Regulatory Landscape in Argentina
Argentina’s pro-crypto stance has been reinforced by legislative measures such as the “Law of Bases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines.” The law, introduced over a year ago, reformed crypto taxation policies, allowing taxpayers to legalize certain digital assets without additional documentation requirements.
Coinbase’s entry into Argentina reflects a growing global trend of crypto adoption. With increasing regulatory clarity and strong local demand, the exchange’s expansion could further solidify Argentina’s position as a key player in the cryptocurrency sector.
