Delta Police, with Chainalysis support, trace and freeze millions from scam wallets in Operation Spincaster, enhancing local law enforcement’s crypto crime capabilities.

In a strategic move to curb the rising tide of cryptocurrency scams, Delta, Canada, has become the latest battleground in the fight against digital fraud. Local law enforcement, in collaboration with Chainalysis, has been equipped with cutting-edge tools to trace and freeze illicit funds as part of Operation Spincaster, according to Chainalysis.

Operation Spincaster’s Impact

Operation Spincaster, a pioneering initiative launched by Chainalysis, aims to disrupt and prevent scams through a synergistic blend of public-private sector collaboration and blockchain intelligence. Initially successful on a national scale, the operation has now extended its reach to Delta, a city with a population of over 100,000.

The initiative, known locally as Operation DeCloak, saw Chainalysis partnering with the Delta Police Department in a two-day sprint in September 2024. This operation involved seven law enforcement agencies and two cryptocurrency exchanges, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Vancouver Police Department, among others. This marks the second Spincaster sprint in Canada, underscoring the nation’s proactive stance against scams.

Unveiling the Scale of Crypto Scams

During the operation, investigators identified over 1,100 victims of cryptocurrency scams, with losses exceeding US $25 million. A detailed analysis of 240 crypto addresses led to these revelations. Participating agencies are actively notifying victims and working to recover stolen funds.

The success of the operation is attributed to the transparency of blockchain technology, which allowed the team to gather intelligence and investigate scams involving approval phishing—a tactic where scammers trick users into authorizing fraudulent transactions.

Expanding Law Enforcement Capabilities

The Delta Police Department Cybercrime Unit, benefiting from the training provided, applied new techniques to ongoing investigations, leading to the identification of additional stolen funds. This included a blacklisted address containing $1.2 million USD, poised for seizure by international law enforcement.

Staff Sergeant Jill Long of the Delta Police Department highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating that the expertise and tools provided by Chainalysis were crucial in identifying victims and tracking stolen funds.

Public-Private Collaboration and Blockchain Analytics

Operation DeCloak’s success underscores the power of collaboration between public and private sectors, leveraging advanced blockchain intelligence to combat scams. The initiative emphasizes the need for continual vigilance and proactive measures in monitoring and freezing funds linked to fraudulent activities.

Chainalysis remains committed to enhancing the cryptocurrency ecosystem’s ability to tackle illicit activities, continuing to partner with law enforcement and exchanges to further these efforts.

Combating Crypto Scams

Chainalysis offers a comprehensive Crypto Investigations Solution that aids in uncovering leads, analyzing fund flows, and disrupting illicit operations. The solution empowers law enforcement and exchanges to efficiently respond to crypto scams and other cybercrimes.

Through international collaboration and advanced technology, Chainalysis continues to support the fight against cryptocurrency fraud, ensuring a safer digital environment for communities worldwide.
