Ethereum’s All Core Developers Execution Call #199 addressed critical updates, including EIP 7742, Pectra Devnet developments, and block gas limit debates.

On October 24, 2024, Ethereum developers convened virtually for the All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #199, chaired by Tim Beiko, Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol Support Lead. These bi-weekly meetings are pivotal for discussing and coordinating changes to Ethereum’s execution layer (EL), as reported by Galaxy.com.

Pectra Devnet 4 and 5 Developments

The meeting reconfirmed the inclusion of EIP 7742 in the upcoming Pectra upgrade, with discussions on doubling the block gas limit over two years post-upgrade without requiring a hard fork. Developers launched Pectra Devnet 4 on October 18, 2024, identifying issues with clients like Erigon and EthereumJS. Meanwhile, preparations for Pectra Devnet 5 included changes to gas costs for EIP 2537 and updates to EIP 7685 and EIP 7702.

Block Gas Limit Increase Debate

The proposal to gradually double the block gas limit over two years was discussed. While some developers, like Nethermind’s Ben Adams, supported EIP 7790, others called for further research and testing. Concerns were raised about implementing related EIPs, such as EIP 4444 and EIP 7623, before increasing the block gas capacity.

Revert Error Codes and November Call Schedule

Felix Lange proposed adding official revert error codes for contract calls to the Execution API, aiming for standardization across clients. The call also addressed the November ACD call schedule, deciding to maintain the scheduled call on November 21 while canceling testing calls on November 11 and 18.
