Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain, LightLink, announced the integration of Hummingbird with the Celestia mainnet. The integration is crucial for reducing storage costs and improving security on LightLink’s way toward 10,000 TPS.

Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) blockchain, LightLink, today announced the launch of its client, Hummingbird, on Celestia’s Mainnet. The integration is integral to LightLink’s journey toward reaching 10,000 transactions per second (TPS) and functions by reducing storage costs and enhancing security.

Reduced Transaction Fees and Greater Scalability

LightLink, the Ethereum L2 blockchain, allows decentralized applications (dApps) and enterprises to offer their users gasless transactions. Hummingbird, a standalone client built by LightLink, will integrate with Celestia’s Mainnet to improve scalability, reduce transaction fees and enhance security. LightLink’s Hummingbird will leverage Celestia’s robust data integrity, immutable record, and modular data availability to slash the operational cost in the LightLink ecosystem.

Currently, LightLink is one of the heaviest data users on Celestia’s Testnet, taking up 18.9 GB of “blobs” (binary large objects), representing 84.5% of Celestia’s Testnet storage volume. Despite being one of its heaviest data users, LightLink boasts some of the lowest data storage fees on the Testnet, paying a mere $0.09 for MB stored. LightLink owes its low fees to its aggressive fee structure and Celestia’s algorithm. These two mechanisms work in tandem to seek the lowest possible cost while gradually reducing it until the best possible outcome is achieved.

Roy Hui, CEO and co-founder of LightLink, commented on the project, saying:

“Integrating Celestia reduces storage costs and enhances security—a strategic move on our path to achieving 10,000 TPS. Using Celestia for our data availability layer will lower costs compared to Ethereum, allowing us to provide these cost savings to end users in the form of lower transaction fees. The outcome is a faster, more reliable blockchain platform that is easier and more accessible, while also addressing the higher gas fees typically required to benefit from Layer 1 protocols.”

Addressing Critical Challenges

Hummingbird, announced in February 2024, is a standalone client built by LightLink and is essential to address critical challenges in data availability. The project protects against challenges from validators on LightLink’s Ethereum settlement layer and embodies the ethos of blockchain: “Don’t trust, verify.”

Hummingbird’s responsibilities include verifying state execution, transaction inclusion, and data availability. In addition, Hummingbird ensures every block’s data is published and accessible for validation, allowing validators to confirm transaction correctness independently.

After Hummingbird’s integration, LightLink will also enable Blobstream, a modular data stream tool that relays Celestia’s data root commitments, allowing developers to create high-throughput operations for L2 networks. The Blobstream integration will launch in the following months, enabling LightLink to develop a “challenger/defender” game for community validators to ensure data availability.

The Hummingbird integration is hot on the heels of LightLink’s token launch, $LL, in April. $LL can be traded on Uniswap, KuCoin, Bybit, Gate.io, and Elektrik. LightLink also recently closed its extended seed and public-facing funding round, which secured the project $11.5 million. The funding is aimed at furthering the development of gasless architecture for blockchain.
