The Ethereum Protocol Fellowship (EPF) concludes its fifth cohort, highlighting significant contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem and preparing for the upcoming sixth cohort.

The Ethereum Protocol Fellowship (EPF) has successfully concluded its fifth cohort, known as Study Group 2025, marking another milestone in its mission to enhance the Ethereum ecosystem. The completion of this cohort was celebrated with EPF Day at Devcon in Bangkok, showcasing the achievements of a diverse group of fellows who spent five months immersed in Ethereum core development, according to Ethereum’s official blog.

Program Highlights and Innovations

This latest cohort saw the introduction of several key changes aimed at improving the fellowship experience. Notably, the program’s duration was extended from four to five months, allowing participants additional time to refine their projects. Furthermore, the cohort was preceded by a 10-week Protocol Study Group, which provided participants with a foundational understanding of the Ethereum protocol, resulting in a smoother onboarding process.

EPF Day was held twice for this cohort, once at the start of the program during EthCC in Brussels and again at Devcon in Bangkok. These events offered fellows the opportunity to present their projects and engage with peers and mentors.

Participant Engagement and Projects

Out of over 300 applications received in May 2024, 20 participants were awarded stipends to work on core research and development projects. An additional 25 participants joined the program permissionlessly, resulting in a total of 30 active fellows by the end of the cohort. Over 500 weekly updates were submitted, reflecting the dynamic and productive engagement of participants.

Fellows contributed to a wide array of projects, collaborating with mentors from leading client and research teams such as Grandine, Prysm, Lighthouse, and others. These projects not only provided valuable learning experiences but also made significant contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem.

Resources and Future Prospects

The program’s resources, including development updates and project proposals, are available in the EPF5 repository. All projects and resources are open-source, fostering a collaborative environment for ongoing research and development in the Ethereum community.

Looking ahead, the Protocol Study Group will continue with a revamped format for 2025, offering an intensive two-week session followed by six weeks of new lectures from core developers. This initiative aims to provide a comprehensive curriculum for anyone interested in Ethereum’s core protocol.

Upcoming Sixth Cohort

The Ethereum Protocol Fellowship is preparing for its sixth cohort, with applications set to open later in April and the cohort beginning in June. Prospective participants are encouraged to join the EPF mailing list to receive notifications and updates.

In anticipation of the next cohort, individuals interested in participating are advised to enhance their understanding of the Ethereum protocol, contribute to open-source projects, and contemplate potential project ideas they wish to pursue.
