OpenAI Codex is now generally available, offering new capabilities including Slack integration, Codex SDK, and enhanced management tools, facilitating easier large-scale use.
OpenAI has announced the general availability of its AI-powered coding assistant, Codex, now enhanced with several new features aimed at improving its utility for development teams. According to OpenAI, these new capabilities include Slack integration, a Codex SDK, and advanced management tools designed to streamline large-scale use and oversight.
Feature Enhancements
OpenAI Codex’s integration with Slack allows users to delegate tasks or ask questions within team channels or threads, making collaboration as seamless as interacting with colleagues. The Codex SDK enables developers to embed the Codex CLI-driven intelligent agent into their workflows, tools, and applications without further tuning, thereby achieving top performance on the GPT-5-Codex model.
Additionally, new management tools offer enhanced control, monitoring, and analytics panels, providing ChatGPT workspace administrators with clearer oversight of Codex, facilitating more efficient large-scale management.
Rapid Adoption and Growth
Since its initial release in research preview in May, Codex has evolved into a more reliable and powerful coding collaboration tool. It can now be used across various coding environments, including editors, terminals, and the cloud, all seamlessly connected through a ChatGPT account.
Codex has seen its daily usage grow over tenfold since early August, with the GPT-5-Codex model processing over 40 trillion characters within three weeks of its release. The model is recognized as one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing products.
Global Adoption
Codex has been widely adopted by developers worldwide, with users ranging from startups like Duolingo and Vanta to large enterprises such as Cisco and Rakuten. Within OpenAI, Codex is now a core component of the development process, with usage among engineers rising from just over half in July to nearly universal adoption. The number of weekly merged pull requests has increased by 70%, with Codex automatically reviewing almost all PRs to catch critical issues before they reach production.
Slack Integration and Codex SDK
By tagging @Codex in Slack channels or conversations, Codex automatically gathers necessary background information, selects an appropriate environment, and returns completed tasks from the Codex cloud. Users can merge changes, iterate continuously, or pull tasks to their local machines for further processing. Details on setting up Slack integration can be found in the documentation.
The Codex SDK is designed for integration into engineering workflows and applications with just a few lines of code, providing structured outputs to parse agent responses and manage session backgrounds. Currently, the SDK supports TypeScript, with additional language versions forthcoming.
Administrative Tools
ChatGPT administrators can now edit or delete Codex cloud environments within workspaces, clear sensitive information, and enforce safer local use defaults through Codex CLI and IDE extensions. Availability and Pricing
Slack integration and the Codex SDK are available to developers on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans. The new administrative features are exclusive to Business, Edu, and Enterprise users. Starting October 20, Codex cloud tasks will count against Codex usage quotas, with detailed pricing information available here.
