Anthropic’s research highlights AI memory strategies, including dreaming and salience tagging, to improve Claude’s long-term knowledge retention.

Anthropic has published new insights into the design of memory systems for AI agents, focusing on how its Claude models retain and organize knowledge between sessions. The research, titled “The components of agent memory” and released on November 6, 2026, outlines strategies such as “dreaming” and salience tagging to enhance memory functionality.

Memory Organization Inspired by Human Cognition

The study draws parallels between human memory processes and AI memory systems. In humans, the hippocampus captures experiences in real time, while offline periods, such as sleep, allow the brain to consolidate these experiences into long-term knowledge stored in the neocortex. Similarly, Anthropic employs a “dreaming” process for Claude, where the model reflects on session logs during idle periods to correct mistakes, create notes, and reorganize memory into linked representations such as wikis.

Anthropic’s Dreams API facilitates this process by consuming existing memory stores and session transcripts to produce refined outputs without altering the original data. This asynchronous job can involve one to 100 session transcripts, enabling the model to consolidate and validate information effectively.

Evaluating Claude’s Memory Capabilities

Anthropic tested Claude’s memory systems using tasks from the Continual Learning Bench (CL-Bench) 1.0 and other benchmarks. In one experiment, Claude was tasked with answering database queries and writing memory notes to improve future performance. Advanced models like Claude Opus 5 and Opus 5.5 demonstrated the ability to close learning loops by recording validated rules and identifying potential pitfalls, outperforming earlier iterations such as Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.7.

In a separate evaluation, Claude’s ability to play Pokémon Red was used to test its judgment of what to save to memory. Models like Sonnet 3.7 wrote detailed but excessive memory files, leading to inefficiency, while Fable 5 prioritized salient information, resulting in better performance. Fable 5 earned four badges with only nine memory files, compared to Sonnet 3.7’s single badge and 413 files.

Impact of Dreaming on Performance

Anthropic also explored the impact of dreaming on memory consolidation through a wiki-building experiment. Using approximately 350,000 internal documents, the study showed that increasing dreaming sessions from two to 128 improved performance on graded criteria from 13% to 48%. In another example, dreaming corrected a misleading memory note during a game-navigation task, enabling Claude to progress where other configurations failed.

Key Takeaways for AI Practitioners

The research emphasizes that persistent storage alone is insufficient for effective AI memory. Memory systems must incorporate evidence checking, correction, organization, and selective retrieval to support long-term task performance. Anthropic’s findings highlight the importance of designing memory processes that balance real-time task demands with future utility, offering valuable insights for advancing AI capabilities.
