Bitcoin’s Uptober Tailwinds Put $87K Wall Back in the Crosshairs

Bitcoin’s price entered October with one of its strongest seasonal tailwinds, and Sunday’s late-session action is finally giving Uptober something to work with. Market data shows bitcoin climbing from an intraday low near $85,552 to as high as $86,771 on Oct. 4, leaving the cryptocurrency around $86,536 at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

That puts bitcoin’s price within striking distance of last Friday’s $87,177 peak and turns the opening week of October into a remarkably tight contest between favorable seasonality and a resistance zone that sellers have defended repeatedly.

Uptober’s Math Points Toward $94,000

Bitcoin wrapped up September near $83,560 after gaining roughly 6.33% over the previous 30 days. A 12% October advance from that closing mark would carry the cryptocurrency to around $94,000, neatly aligning with the upper reaches of several current market forecasts. ChatGPT-6 Astra also lands on that figure, placing its base-case bitcoin price prediction for Dec. 31, 2026, at $94,000.

History provides the bulls with plenty of ammunition. Bitcoin has closed higher in 10 of the past 13 Octobers, producing a median gain of 12.7%. The streak did stumble last year when October 2025 finished down 3.7%, marking the first losing October since 2018. Prediction markets are less adventurous. Polymarket gives bitcoin roughly a 39% chance of reaching $100,000 before 2027, while the marketplace Kalshi’s year-end pricing sits much closer to where the cryptocurrency trades today.

Sunday’s Bitcoin Rally Changes the Short-Term Map

Sunday’s tape has become considerably more interesting. The short-sighted, five-minute Bitstamp chart shows BTC climbing from $85,552 to $86,771, with buyers methodically carrying the price higher rather than producing one isolated vertical candle. At roughly $86,536 by 7:30 p.m. EDT, bitcoin had surrendered only part of that advance. More importantly, the cryptocurrency is now sitting less than $650 beneath Friday’s $87,177 peak.

That puts the heat squarely on $87,000 to $87,500. A clean move through Friday’s high would immediately challenge the upper boundary of the range, while a daily close above $87,500 to $88,000 would crack the door open toward $90,000 and eventually $95,000 to $96,000. The downside map remains straightforward. $84,000 to $84,300 offers the first meaningful support, while $82,000 to $82,500 remains the structural floor. A daily close below $82,000 would put $78,000 to $80,000 back on the board.

Wall Street Is Buying, but the Pace Has Cooled

Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds remain one of October’s more persuasive tailwinds after collecting roughly $6.3 billion in third-quarter net inflows, including approximately $2.7 billion during September. The latest week, however, took some steam out of the engine.

Provisional flows from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 totaled about $83 million compared with $2.39 billion the previous week. Daily exchange-traded fund (ETF) trading value has also fallen from $4.57 billion on Sept. 21 to below $2 billion. Institutional buyers haven’t left the building. They simply aren’t going for broke at current prices.

CPI, Mt Gox and Oil Can Still Spoil the Party

October’s seasonal advantage now runs into a crowded calendar. CPI arrives Oct. 14, followed by the Federal Reserve’s Oct. 27-28 meeting, while turbulence around the Strait of Hormuz keeps oil and inflation expectations firmly in the conversation. Then there’s Mt Gox. Its wallets still hold 34,388 BTC worth roughly $2.9 billion ahead of an Oct. 31 creditor deadline. The trustee extended the deadline previously, but an actual distribution would introduce a sizable supply event that doesn’t require a disappointing inflation print or another geopolitical shock to matter.

Friday also offered a useful lesson about the ceiling bitcoin is approaching again. September payrolls increased by only 29,000 while unemployment held at 4.2%, helping propel bitcoin to $87,177 before sellers knocked the price back to a $84,304 daily close. Sunday’s climb to $86,771 means bitcoin is already back for another crack at that wall. Uptober has history, institutional demand and constructive longer-term technicals in its corner. Now the market has reached the part that matters. Touching $87,000 again is no longer the story. Holding it would be.
