Hong Kong’s Faster Payment System (FPS) will undergo a planned system enhancement on August 9, 2026, impacting payment services for 10 hours.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has announced a planned system enhancement for the Faster Payment System (FPS) on Sunday, August 9, 2026. The upgrade will render the FPS service unavailable from 1:00 am to 11:00 am local time. This 10-hour downtime will allow Hong Kong Interbank Clearing Limited (HKICL), the system operator, to implement improvements aimed at bolstering FPS functionality.

Banks and stored-value facility (SVF) operators have been instructed to notify customers in advance, advising them to plan their payment activities accordingly. Users can contact individual service providers for more details on how the downtime might impact specific payment services.

FPS, launched in 2018, has become a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s financial infrastructure. It supports instant transfers in both Hong Kong dollars (HKD) and Renminbi (RMB), with features like mobile phone number and email address proxies, QR-code payments, and cross-boundary payment capabilities. Adoption has surged over the years, with account registrations reaching over 16.2 million as of early 2025, a nearly eightfold increase since its launch.

In recent years, FPS has expanded its role in fostering cross-border financial connectivity. On June 20, 2025, the HKMA and the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) launched “Payment Connect,” linking Hong Kong’s FPS with Mainland China’s Internet Banking Payment System (IBPS). This integration aims to streamline real-time payments between the two regions. Additionally, the HKMA has explored new use cases, such as a pilot project announced in June 2026 to test digital payment solutions in derivatives trading.

The planned system upgrade aligns with Hong Kong’s broader push to modernize its financial systems and maintain its status as a global financial hub. As FPS continues to evolve, its resilience and functionality will be critical to supporting Hong Kong’s fintech ecosystem and enhancing payment efficiency for businesses and consumers alike.

Customers relying on FPS are advised to complete any critical transactions in advance of the scheduled maintenance window. Further updates or potential disruptions will likely be communicated by individual banks and SVF operators as the enhancement date approaches.
