Stablecoin Market Tops $300B as Circle Targets 40 New Markets

The global stablecoin market has reached roughly $300 billion as demand for dollar-backed digital assets continues to expand beyond crypto trading.

At the same time, Circle is preparing a major international push that could bring USDC into around 40 additional emerging and developing markets.

The combination highlights how stablecoins are increasingly becoming payment and settlement infrastructure rather than simply tools for moving money between crypto exchanges.

Stablecoin Market Reaches $300 Billion

DefiLlama data shows total stablecoin market capitalization at approximately $300.1 billion as of October 26.

Tether remains the clear market leader.

USDT accounts for roughly $182.3 billion, representing about 60.7% of the total stablecoin market.

USDC ranks second with approximately $71.7 billion.

Together, USDT and USDC account for the majority of dollar-pegged liquidity across crypto markets.

Circle Targets 40 New Markets

Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire told Reuters that the company plans to expand into around 40 emerging and developing markets.

The strategy reflects growing demand for stablecoins in regions where access to dollars, international transfers and traditional banking infrastructure can be limited.

Circle expects blockchain-based financial services to move from early experimentation toward much broader adoption.

The expansion could significantly increase USDC’s international reach.

USDT Still Dominates

Despite Circle’s growth plans, Tether remains far ahead by market capitalization.

USDT stands at around $182 billion compared with USDC at roughly $72 billion.

That gives Tether more than twice the circulating supply of its closest competitor.

USDT’s advantage is particularly strong in crypto trading and emerging markets, where it is widely used as a dollar substitute.

USDC has traditionally focused more heavily on regulated institutions, fintech companies and US-based platforms.

Stablecoin Supply Has Recently Slowed

Although the market remains close to record size, stablecoin supply has declined slightly during October.

DefiLlama shows total market capitalization down roughly 0.9% over the past 30 days.

USDC has fallen by close to 5% over the same period, while USDT has declined less than 1%.

The decline suggests some capital has moved out of stablecoins during recent market volatility.

However, the broader market remains significantly larger than in previous years.

Stablecoins Are Becoming Payment Infrastructure

Stablecoins are increasingly used outside speculative crypto trading.

Common use cases now include:

  • international payments

  • remittances

  • corporate settlement

  • crypto trading

  • DeFi collateral

  • dollar savings

  • merchant payments

Their biggest advantage is speed.

Blockchain-based dollars can move globally at any time without depending on traditional banking hours.

That makes stablecoins particularly attractive in countries where dollar access is restricted or cross-border payments remain expensive.

USDC Expansion Could Intensify Competition

Circle’s international push could create stronger competition with Tether.

USDT currently benefits from enormous liquidity and widespread adoption.

USDC, however, has positioned itself around regulatory compliance and institutional integration.

If Circle successfully expands into dozens of new markets, that gap could begin to narrow.

The competition will likely centre on three factors:

Distribution: Which stablecoin is supported by the largest number of exchanges, wallets and payment platforms?

Regulation: Which issuer can operate legally across the widest range of jurisdictions?

Liquidity: Which stablecoin is easiest to buy, sell and transfer globally?

What Comes Next for Stablecoins?

The stablecoin market is entering a new phase.

The question is no longer whether dollar-backed tokens have a use case.

They already represent roughly $300 billion in digital liquidity.

The next stage will focus on distribution, regulation and payments.

Tether remains the dominant issuer, but Circle’s planned expansion into 40 new markets shows that competition for global stablecoin adoption is accelerating.

As stablecoins move deeper into payments and financial infrastructure, USDT and USDC could increasingly compete not only with each other, but also with traditional banking rails.
