Stacks Price Jumps 17% Before Sellers Slam the Brakes

All news is rigorously fact-checked and reviewed by leading blockchain experts and seasoned industry insiders.
  • The Stacks price rallied sharply over the past day, but sellers pushed back hard when it reached higher resistance.
  • STX moved back above its short-term trend line, while the longer-term one still holds the price down.
  • Bitcoin staking on Stacks has drawn institutional participants since it went live.
  • A new bonding period and the Epoch 4.1 upgrade are the next scheduled events for the network.

Stacks (STX) climbed more than 17% over the past 24 hours to trade near $0.327 on Saturday, lifting its market capitalization to about $616 million and leaving it about 22% above the $0.268 low it set earlier this week. The move came on the largest 4-hour trading volume STX has recorded since mid-October, yet the same candle that carried the token as high as $0.399 also showed sellers returning quickly, and the price gave back most of that spike within hours.

No fresh announcement lines up with the timing. The most concrete fundamental backdrop is still the Q3 2026 Ecosystem Report that Stacks published on October 15, which showed Bitcoin staking drawing both BTC and institutional names within its first two bonding periods. That report is two weeks old, so it explains why traders keep coming back to STX better than it explains Saturday’s candle.

Sellers Met the Rally Near $0.40

On the Binance 4-hour chart, the rebound lifted STX back above its 50-period exponential moving average at $0.3070. That average tracks roughly the past eight days of trading, so reclaiming it means buyers who entered over that stretch are back in profit on average. The 200-period average, which covers about a month, sits higher at $0.3329, and the price has not closed above it.

The two averages crossed bearishly around October 24, a pattern traders call a death cross. It stays in force until the shorter line climbs back over the longer one, and that has not happened yet.

For the next few sessions, the long upper wick on the latest candle says more than the gain itself. STX briefly cleared the 0.618 Fibonacci retracement at $0.3897, measured from the mid-October high of $0.465 down to this week’s $0.268 low, before falling back toward $0.32. Buyers had enough money behind them for a short spike, but plenty of holders used it as a chance to sell. The candle was still open when the chart was captured, so its final shape could change by the close.

The relative strength index reads about 65.6 on a scale where readings above 70 usually mean buying has run too hot too fast. STX is close to that zone. The RSI’s own average sits much lower at 46.6, and a gap that wide shows how abruptly momentum turned, which often gets resolved through a few sessions of sideways trading.

STX price ladder 4-hour chart
$0.399 RESISTANCE Wick high where sellers took over the rally
$0.333-$0.343 RESISTANCE 200 EMA and 0.382 Fibonacci, the first barrier for a lasting recovery
$0.327 STX NOW Trading price after the 17% jump
$0.3145 SUPPORT 0.236 Fibonacci, the nearest floor for the rebound
$0.3070 SUPPORT 50 EMA, a break below brings the $0.268 low back into view

Why Staked Bitcoin Needs STX

Bitcoin staking runs on PoX-5, the protocol upgrade Stacks activated on July 30. BTC holders keep their coins timelocked on Bitcoin’s base layer under their own custody and pair them with STX locked at 5% of the bitcoin’s value, forming what Stacks calls a bond. That pairing rule ties every bonded bitcoin directly to demand for the network’s own token.

The 735 BTC bonded across the first two periods requires STX worth only about 37 BTC, a small amount next to a $616 million market cap. The larger figure is staked STX, which rose from 392 million to 493 million after PoX-5 unlocked all previously staked tokens and holders chose to lock them again. That is about a quarter of the circulating supply, and none of it can be sold until its bonding period ends.

Institutional participants in the first periods included the asset manager 21Shares, HashKey Cloud, Sypher Capital and UTXO Management, which Stacks named as the inaugural participant in Bitcoin staking back in May. Stacking DAO’s stBTC, a token that represents staked bitcoin and can still be moved and used in lending or trading apps on Stacks, grew to 636 BTC in supply, and most of it now serves as lending collateral on Zest Protocol, a lending app on Stacks. Stacking DAO now adds BTC rewards to stBTC daily, so the token’s value grows without holders having to claim anything.

The Calendar Into December

Stacks is moving to monthly bonding periods, and the third one is due in November. Its intake will be the first new data point on institutional demand since the Q3 report, and it will show whether the jump from 230 BTC to 505 BTC was a launch effect or the start of a trend.

Bitflow Super Router and CLAMM improvements

Epoch 4.1 will make Clarity 7, the latest version of the programming language Stacks uses for smart contracts, the default for new contracts. Stacks has committed to publishing the activation block height at least 30 days in advance, so if the early-December target holds, that announcement should come within days. Stacks has also scheduled its monthly ecosystem update for November 5, which falls inside that window. Bitflow, a decentralized exchange on Stacks, plans to upgrade its Super Router, which looks for the cheapest path for a trade, and its CLAMM, a pool design that lets liquidity providers concentrate funds in narrower price ranges. Stack Sats, a rewards program that pays out 1 BTC a month to users who put bitcoin to work through Bitflow trading or Zest lending, runs until December 10.

Muneeb Ali Back at the Helm

Muneeb Ali, who co-founded Stacks, became CEO of Stacks Labs, the largest contributor to the network, on October 15. He replaced interim chief Alex Miller, who moved into an advisory role. Before taking over, Ali laid out a longer-term plan for Bitcoin capital markets built on Stacks at Korea Blockchain Week and TOKEN2049. At TOKEN2049, he also set out a rough timeline for protecting Bitcoin against quantum computers: about two years to upgrade the network, then about two more for holders to move their coins to quantum-safe addresses. He has since warned that Bitcoin could enter a riskier period if that work is not done by 2028, and post-quantum security is one of the priorities in his plan for Stacks through 2030, which the team calls the Satoshi Upgrades.

STX rallied more than 20% on October 1, the day Ali announced his return, and kept climbing to about $0.465 by mid-October. From there it fell about 42% to this week’s $0.268 low. At TOKEN2049, Ali set out a rough timeline for protecting Bitcoin against quantum computers: about two years to upgrade the network, then about two more for holders to move their coins to quantum-safe addresses. He has since warned that Bitcoin could enter a riskier period if that work is not done by 2028, and post-quantum security is one of the priorities in his plan for Stacks through 2030, which the team calls the Satoshi Upgrades.

The November bonding period will be the first to open entirely under Ali’s leadership, and he has said his priorities are bringing more bitcoin into the network and expanding institutional participation. That makes the BTC intake the first hard number his tenure can be judged by. For the Stacks price, the more immediate marker is a 4-hour close above $0.3433, which would take STX through both the 200-period average and the 0.382 retracement for the first time since the death cross formed.
