Troubleshooting x402 Endpoints on Algorand (ALGO) Leaderboard

Learn how to fix x402 endpoints missing from Algorand (ALGO) facilitator leaderboards or the Bazaar, including discovery and attribution issues.

Developers using x402 endpoints on the Algorand (ALGO) blockchain to power machine-payable APIs are encountering a recurring issue: their endpoints are not appearing on the facilitator leaderboard or the Bazaar. x402 endpoints utilize HTTP 402 Payment Required to programmatically settle payments for API access. This functionality is critical for AI agents, APIs, and machine-to-machine commerce, but poor configuration can hinder visibility on key metrics.

The root of the problem typically falls into one of two categories: discovery issues or attribution gaps. Discovery problems prevent endpoints from being cataloged in the Bazaar, while attribution issues mean settled payments don’t count toward the Global x402 Challenge leaderboard.

Discovery Layer: Getting Indexed in the Bazaar

Discovery is separate from payment settlement. While payments verify and settle on-chain, discovery requires an additional configuration—declaring a discovery extension via declareDiscoveryExtension. Without this, the facilitator can’t catalog the endpoint for visibility in the Bazaar.

To check if your endpoint is indexed, query the discovery API:

curl -s "https://facilitator.goplausible.xyz/discovery/resources?includeTestnets=true&limit=1000" \
 | jq '.items[] | select(.resourceUrl | contains("your-domain"))'

If nothing is returned, add the discovery extension to your endpoint’s route configuration. Even a minimal configuration—declareDiscoveryExtension({})—is sufficient to get indexed. After making this change, process a $0.01 payment to trigger discovery indexing.

Attribution: Qualifying for the Global x402 Challenge

If your endpoint appears in the Bazaar but isn’t on the leaderboard for the $100K USD + 500K ALGO Global x402 Challenge, the issue likely stems from improper attribution. To compete, your payments must include the specific tag: "x402-global-challenge" in the route’s configuration. Without it, payments will settle but won’t be attributed to the challenge.

To verify attribution, check the leaderboard API for your endpoint’s activity:

BASE=https://facilitator.goplausible.xyz/data/leaderboards
for s in x402-global-challenge bazaar direct dev; do
  echo "src=$s"
  curl -s "$BASE?cat=merchants&limit=200&range=all&env=mainnet&src=$s" \
    | jq '.items[] | select(.address=="YOUR_PAYTO_ADDRESS") | {rank,settles,volume}'
done

If your payments are attributed to src=dev or src=direct instead of src=x402-global-challenge, adjust your endpoint’s configuration to include the challenge tag. Importantly, this tag only affects future payments; past settlements won’t count retroactively.

Common Pitfalls and Best Practices

1. **Test Payments:** Ensure at least one successful payment against the route to verify discovery and attribution. Localhost payments are cataloged under DEV and won’t count toward leaderboard rankings.

2. **Avoid Self-Payment Loops:** Repeated payments from cron jobs or bots may be flagged as non-competitive traffic and filed under DEV, even on Mainnet.

3. **Enhance Metadata:** Once your endpoint is discoverable, enrich its metadata to improve visibility. Use og:site_name, og:title, and og:image tags to create a polished listing in the Bazaar.

Why This Matters

x402 endpoints represent a critical shift in blockchain utility, enabling microtransactions for APIs and machine commerce without traditional account setups. Algorand aims to position itself as a leader in this space, offering developers a seamless way to monetize API access. However, misconfigured endpoints undermine this potential, leaving developers without leaderboard visibility or challenge rewards.

For those competing in the Global x402 Challenge, fixing these issues could mean the difference between staying competitive and missing out on significant prizes. With $100K USD and 500K ALGO at stake, ensuring proper discovery and attribution should be a top priority for any x402 developer.
