Uphold Adds XRP, Bitcoin Inheritance, Citing $331 Billion Stranded

Key Takeaways

  • The supported holdings are XRP, bitcoin (BTC), and Hedera (HBAR).
  • Beneficiaries remain unable to spend funds until their claims are approved.
  • Current Uphold Vault customers will see new pricing after Dec. 31, 2026.

Uphold Vault Users Get a $19.99 Monthly Inheritance Option

Crypto holders can arrange for a named beneficiary to receive their assets after death through Uphold Vault, an app-based wallet. The financial technology company announced Vault Inheritance Sept. 29. Its assisted self-custody model combines user control with company support for replacing cryptographic keys, the credentials used to authorize transactions.

The feature costs $19.99 per month and includes a free 30-day trial for U.S. users with their subscription. The launch addresses an access problem that can leave families unable to recover cryptocurrency despite inheriting legal ownership. Unlike a conventional investment account, a blockchain balance may remain inaccessible when the deceased owner leaves no usable credentials.

Nancy Beaton, Uphold’s president of consumer, said:

“Uphold Vault Inheritance gives our customers something major players in the industry haven’t offered before: a credible, straightforward way to ensure their crypto goes exactly where they intend it to.”

How Beneficiaries Receive Control of the Assets

Customers begin by inviting a beneficiary from their dashboard, which sends notification and account setup instructions to the designated person. That person establishes an account with the provider to accept the eventual distribution. Customers can change their selection during their lifetime. The company says the beneficiary needs no previous experience with digital currencies.

After the customer’s death, the compliance support team reviews legal documentation before approving a claim and transferring the holdings into the recipient’s wallet. Until approval, the funds remain in the deceased customer’s account. This procedure addresses a practical obstacle illustrated by families losing access to inherited cryptocurrency.

Access arrangements have historically involved passing passwords, personal identification numbers (PINs), and recovery information to a trusted family member. A 2017 account described written instructions and backup seed phrases stored for that purpose. These phrases are sequences of words used to restore a wallet when a device or its login details are unavailable.

How Much Bitcoin Is Actually Lost?

Uphold values nearly 4 million BTC believed to be stranded at approximately $331 billion, including holdings affected by owner deaths or missing credentials. Separately, bitcoin financial services provider River estimated in its research on permanent bitcoin losses that 1.57 million coins were permanently lost, with 98% of those losses occurring before 2020. Its analysis treats a subset of long-inactive coins as likely lost.

Determining how much is permanently inaccessible remains uncertain, as inactive addresses may also belong to long-term holders. Different assumptions about early mining holdings affect estimates of lost coins. A dormant balance might remain spendable by its owner, while a missing private key, the secret credential that authorizes transactions, may prevent anyone from moving it.

Private keys govern spending authority within bitcoin wallets, even when an heir has obtained legal title through an estate. That technical requirement exists separately from ownership records and succession documents. The new arrangement connects a verified claim with the delivery of the cryptographic authority needed to manage the deceased person’s investment.

Vault began in December 2023 with XRP support, followed by bitcoin support in April 2024. Alongside its built-in key replacement, the product provides access to trading on the platform. The latest addition extends those functions to legacy planning, with current customers scheduled to see the revised pricing plan after Dec. 31, 2026.
