US Inflation Reaches 4-Month High as Bitcoin Bulls Retreat

Key Takeaways

  • U.S. inflation reached 3.7% in September as gasoline prices jumped 9.1%, driving more than half the monthly increase.
  • Bitcoin dropped roughly $1,000 after the CPI release, falling below $83,000 as Treasury yields climbed.
  • The Federal Reserve faces another inflation test Oct. 15, when September’s PPI figures are released.

Gasoline Prices Push U.S. Inflation to 3.7%

America’s inflation problem just got more expensive, and the war in Iran is helping foot the bill. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported Wednesday, Oct. 14, that the consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.6% in September, following August’s 0.4% advance. Annual inflation accelerated from 3.4% to 3.7%, edging past economists’ 3.6% forecast.

The biggest culprit wasn’t housing or groceries. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% in a single month, accounting for more than half of the overall increase. Compared with September 2025, gasoline costs, which followed crude prices, climbed an eye-watering 34.2%. The broader energy index increased 5.2% monthly and 20.4% annually. Food prices held steady for September, while shelter costs rose 0.4%.

Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, also delivered an unwelcome surprise. It increased 0.3% monthly and 2.6% annually, exceeding forecasts of 0.2% and 2.5%, respectively.

Wall Street Retreats as Bitcoin Loses $1,000

Financial markets didn’t take the news kindly. Dow Jones futures slipped approximately 0.2%, S&P 500 futures declined 0.3%, and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 0.6% following the 8:30 a.m. Eastern release. Treasury yields climbed as traders reconsidered how aggressively the Federal Reserve might tighten monetary policy. The two-year yield approached 4.91%, while the 10-year yield neared 5.29%.

Bitcoin’s price took an immediate hit. The cryptocurrency fell from approximately $83,800 toward $82,800, shedding roughly $1,000 as the inflation figures crossed trading desks. Leveraged long liquidations added pressure, leaving traders watching support between $81,000 and $82,000.

The reaction followed September’s Federal Reserve rate increase, which lifted the benchmark target range to 3.75% to 4%. With inflation running hotter than anticipated, hopes for an early return to easier monetary conditions have taken another beating.

Thursday’s Producer Inflation Report Takes Center Stage

The next economic test arrives Thursday when the BLS releases September’s producer price index (PPI) at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. The report measures prices received by producers and could reveal whether higher energy costs are spreading further through the economy.

Retail sales figures are also scheduled for Thursday, giving investors another window into consumer spending. The Federal Reserve meets Oct. 27-28, with policymakers weighing stubborn inflation against September’s disappointing addition of just 29,000 jobs. Presently, Polymarket bettors give a quarter-point Fed hike a 44% chance, and odds climbed following the CPI release before dipping again.

For bitcoin traders, reclaiming the $84,000 zone would help restore the market’s footing. But another hot inflation reading on Thursday could leave Wall Street confronting an uncomfortable possibility: The energy shock isn’t finished working its way through prices.
